Starts a background scan and immediately displays the requested root. Published batches update the graphic on the GUI thread. A new request cancels the previous worker cooperatively, without joining it on the GUI. Roots that fail restore the preceding snapshot and emit loadFailed. F5/reload subsequently use background loading too.
