Enumerates the current OS audio inputs without opening a recording stream. Each call returns a fresh catalogue. Names need not be unique; keep the descriptor to select an input by its opaque ID. Linux sources may include monitor/loopback inputs, identified by their OS labels. This can wait for the audio service; call it outside GUI callbacks.

Available inputs; an empty catalogue means no enumerated device.
